Angus Taylor announces broadband blueprint for Wollondilly

Tuesday, 04 November 2014

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced a blueprint for fast broadband across Wollondilly Shire.

Ahead of outlining the plans in Picton today, Mr Taylor said the rollout of fast broadband across Wollondilly would start from 2015, with available access expected in 2016.

“This is a huge win for Wollondilly. I am delighted today to announce that a large part of the solution will be fibre to the premise, as well as fibre to the node and fixed wireless.

“This is what I have been fighting for and what the Government has been promising – a rollout of fast broadband to those areas in most urgent need - and we are delivering for Wollondilly,” Mr Taylor said.

He said that NBN Co would today (Wednesday) be holding its first planning meetings with council, to map the rollout of the fixed line network.

“It’s expected construction of three Fibre Serving Area Modules will start in the first half of 2015, connecting approximately 9000 premises to the fibre to the premises (FTTP) network."

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the Government was making good on its pledge to deliver the NBN sooner and more affordably for taxpayers and consumers.

“Since the election, we have increased the number of premises passed by the NBN Co’s fibre to the premises network from 260,000 to 554,000, while connections have more than quadrupled,” he said.  “Prior to the election, there had been very little progress around Wollondilly Shire but we are now rolling out this network faster than ever.”

Angus Taylor said he would be securing the best communications outcomes possible for businesses and residents of Wollondilly, working closely with Mayor Col Mitchell and council on the rollout. He said progress updates could be found at www.nbnco.com.au/maps

Media are invited to an announcement of the Wollondilly broadband rollout in the Boardroom at Wollondilly Shire Council Chambers, Menangle Street, Picton at 1.30pm Wednesday 5 November.
