$500,000 to build Boorowa Long Day Care

Saturday, 06 June 2015

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced $500,000 in Federal funding to build a long day care centre at Boorowa. Mr Taylor said a 76 place facility would provide almost four times the number of child care places available locally.

“This is brilliant for the community. I lobbied hard for Boorowa to be considered for exceptional circumstances assistance to kick start planning for the centre and this further funding is a great example of what we can achieve when we work together,” Mr Taylor said.

Capital works funding will be provided to the Boorowa Preschool Committee under the Federal Government’s Child Care Community Support Programme.

Mr Taylor said without long day care, some local parents continue to travel more than 100km to take their children to care. “The Federal Government wants to help more families into the workforce by making childcare more affordable, more available and more flexible. Boorowa families will have more options on the table and, as I’ve seen happen in other smaller centres in my electorate, long day care brings more families into a community and more income into town.”

Boorowa Mayor Wendy Tuckerman said the new centre would allow a choice for greater economic participation at all levels. “This announcement has come after a lot of hard work and commitment by the Preschool Committee Long Day Care Working Group - and Boorowa Council has actively participated in that group to help provide the expertise needed. The committee received much needed support from Angus Taylor and he has done a wonderful job in securing this outcome,” Cr Tuckerman said.

Preschool committee president Sarah Rose said she could not be more thrilled with the news. “This means so much to the people of Boorowa and surrounding districts. We are so incredibly grateful to the Federal Government for this grant and in particular to Angus who believed in our vision.

“It's not only the longer hours that make it appealing and easier for parents to return to work, the new centre will be licensed for 0-5 year olds, providing positions for babies and toddlers that the Preschool has been unable to provide before.”

Mr Taylor congratulated the Preschool committee on its successful funding application and said he believed building work was to start later in the year.
