New traffic lights are operational on the Camden Valley Way and Macarthur Road intersection in Elderslie, with a $5.56 million upgrade to the area now complete.

Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the new signals marked the completion of the Camden Valley Way – Macarthur Road Intersection upgrade, funded through the Australian Government’s $200 million Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan Local Roads Package.

“This is just one of many local projects to receive funding through the Local Roads Package’s second $62 million funding round, which followed on from the first $29.4 million round in 2016,” Mr Tudge said.

“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that local roads have the capacity to meet future population growth, and we will continue to work with local councils to deliver targeted road improvements.”

NSW Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the intersection upgrade included the installation of street lights, additional intersection lanes, longer turning and merging lanes as well as the realignment of the northern end of Macarthur Road and the relocation of underground utilities.

“This upgrade will improve safety for traffic entering and exiting Macarthur Road, increase visibility for drivers on Camden Valley Way and reduce conflicts between turning vehicles,” Mr Ayres said.

“It will also reduce delays and travel times and provide better traffic flow at the intersection.”

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the intersection upgrade was part of the

Camden to Narellan Corridor Upgrade, which included a number of separate projects.

“Works have now started on the Camden Valley Way – Graham Hill Road and Richardson Road intersection upgrade, another key component of the Camden to Narellan Corridor Upgrade,” Mr Taylor said.

“Each intersection upgrade along the corridor is part of the enormous infrastructure investment in northern Hume, to boost the efficiency of the road network.”

NSW Member for Camden Chris Patterson said the Camden local government area was one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with housing, retail and employment developments set to dramatically increase its residential population.

“Around 18,000 vehicles use the Camden Valley Way every day and we predict a 30 per cent increase in traffic by 2040,” Mr Patterson said.

“This project ensures that existing and future volumes of traffic are managed efficiently.”

Camden Mayor Peter Sidgreaves thanked the Australian Government and said the upgrade provided a safer corridor to Western Sydney’s growing employment and residential areas.

“Camden Valley Way is a vital corridor servicing the growth in the Western Sydney employment area,” Cr Sidgreaves said.

“These works will deliver increased capacity for the road, enabling it to be a much safer and less congested route for residents and business.”

The $5.56 million Camden Valley Way – Macarthur Road intersection upgrade was jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Camden Council, with the Australian Government contributing $4.295 million and the Camden Council contributing $1.265 million.
