Concern for man injured in last night's bushfire near Bowning

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has expressed concern for a volunteer fire fighter injured in last night’s bushfire near Bowning south of Yass.

“I would like to express my deep concern and sympathy for the well known local man who was injured fighting this fire, and his family and friends. I wish him a full and speedy recovery from his injuries.

“The Yass Fire Control Centre says two aircraft and more than 50 fire trucks were on hand after 6pm last night, when the fire flared up on the edge of the Hume Highway, six kilometres south of Yass.

“So everything was thrown at this one. An enormous thanks to all volunteers who dropped what they were doing to bring this fire under control so quickly. Smoke could be seen all the way back along the Hume past Gunning to Collector, fanned by strong winds. The fire was contained late last night after it had burnt out 140 hectares.

“Reports that up to 300 cattle were lost in the fire are exaggerated. However there were some confirmed stock losses, which is sad news.

“One of the landowners in question has also lost a large amount of stored hay, an unoccupied house and a shearing shed. This has been a costly night for landowners involved and for the man injured.”
