Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced an $800 government grant for the Cowra Men’s Shed, hailing the group as a “shining light” for the Men’s Shed movement.

“Cowra Men’s Shed is going from strength to strength. Since its inception seven years ago, membership has rocketed ahead. There are now more than 50 financial members and up to 25 attendees at twice weekly get togethers,” Mr Taylor said.

Cowra Men’s Shed President Doug Beer welcomed the Federal funding.

“We‘ll be purchasing a colour printer with this funding, which is much needed. We’ve had the busiest 12 months to date, having also received a large grant from the State Government to build an entirely new building for passive recreation. The new building is for those of us who don’t want to make something with a machine, but would prefer to sit around and enjoy each other’s company,” Mr Beer said.

Mr Taylor congratulated the Men’s Shed members on their energy and initiative.

“Men’s Sheds provide a welcoming environment, where men of all ages can work on a project or simply drop in for a catch up. Nationally, this movement is helping connect men to local services and in so doing improve their general health and involvement in the community.”

“The Federal grants were awarded to Men’s Sheds that demonstrated a commitment to working with local councils and other community services. Under the Shed Development Program, all sheds in Australia can apply for up to $8,000 in financial support. A new round of funding will be open for Men’s Sheds early this year and information on the application process can be directed to the Australian Men’s Shed Association via email at amsa@mensshed.net or telephone 1300 550 009.”
