Hume election result: ‘Nothing short of overwhelming.’

Sunday, 19 May 2019

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has thanked Hume residents for their strong support and for helping return the Coalition for a third term in Government.

Speaking at supporters’ functions in Camden and Goulburn on Saturday night, Mr Taylor said what he had seen on polling day and in the last weeks of pre-poll was ‘nothing short of overwhelming’.

“The swing our way is something I could not have predicted. But as I moved from booth to booth, the optimism, the confidence and belief in what we are doing, inspired me more than anything else. Each time I was buoyed by what I saw.

“Tradies, young families, farmers, working people, up the hill into the polling booth, backing us…backing us.

“Scott Morrison, from the moment he became Prime Minister, said I’m going to back middle Australia. He christened the rest of it ‘the Canberra bubble’. And how right was he?

“When the ‘Canberra bubble’  was saying that everything was moving against the Government, it was the people of Hume and from electorates all over Australia just like Hume, who said ‘No. We disagree. We’re on the Government’s side. We’re on your side because you’re actually thinking about what we care about, the issues we care about, not what the Canberra bubble wants.’

“And that is why we have done so well. This is a glorious victory for the issues that we all care about.

“I am so proud to have been a part of this Government for the past six years and, over the recent eight months, to have been a Cabinet Minister with Scott Morrison.

“We have backed middle Australia and middle Australia has spoken. I sincerely thank the people of Hume for this. I am very grateful to have the privilege of representing you for another three years.”

Angus Taylor has been returned with 46,231 first preference votes (as of Sunday 19 May). To date, the Australian Electoral Commission has recorded 70.68% of votes counted in Hume, with prepoll votes yet to be recorded. https://tallyroom.aec.gov.au/HouseDivisionPage-24310-125.htm
