NSW Senator Fiona Nash and Member for Hume Angus Taylor today congratulated students in Hume who have been awarded one of the nation’s top prizes for Year 12 students undertaking Vocational Education and Training in School (VETiS).

The eight students are among 500 students to receive the Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP), which recognises the skill, commitment and achievements of school students who take on vocational education in their final year.

A further 20 prizes – the Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in School – have been awarded to the top AVSP recipients across State, industry and Indigenous categories. 

“These eight students are not just ambassadors for their school but also for the first-class career opportunities that high-quality VETiS can provide,” Senator Nash said.

“Our vocational training in schools program will have stronger links to industry and training providers, to equip graduates with the skills employers need. The future prosperity of our economy very much depends on a highly-skilled workforce,” Mr Taylor said.

The AVSP recognises Year 12 students from 2013 who excelled while undertaking a VETiS program or an Australian School-based Apprenticeship.

The AVSP was launched in 2005 as the vocational equivalent of the academic Australian Student Prize, which will be awarded shortly and is another initiative aimed at recognising the achievements of students and their schools.
