Largest number of Anzac Centenary grants in Hume

Thursday, 16 April 2015

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced $125,000 in Federal funding for Anzac Centenary commemorative projects across the Hume electorate.

“There are 34 projects funded in Hume under the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme – the largest number of approved applications for a Federal electorate in Australia,” Mr Taylor said.

“We had such an outstanding response from local communities and have consequently been able to fund an enormous range of projects and moving tributes planned for this centenary year.”

Mr Taylor said one of the standout events in Hume would be the Kangaroo March Centenary Re-Enactment, which had received $13,319 in funding toward a re-enactment march planned for September/October this year.

The Kangaroo March will follow the original recruitment route in 1915 through towns including Cootamundra, Wallendbeen, Harden, Galong, Binalong, Yass, Jerrawa, Gunning, Cullerin, Goulburn, Marulan, Tallong, Wingello, Bundanoon, Exeter, Moss Vale, Mittagong, Colo Vale, Hill Top and Thirlmere.

The ‘Wollondilly Remembers’ event on 18 April, hosted by the Picton-Thirlmere-Bargo RSL Sub-Branch, has been allocated $10,000 for a day of presentations and performances, cumulating in a memorial ball that evening.

Mr Taylor said a number of other projects and events had received funding, including:

  • community memorials to be installed at Wollondilly Anglican College, Mulwaree High School and Goulburn High School,
  • a school banner competition coordinated by the Wollondilly Shire Council,
  • a commemorative book designed and published by the Mount Hunter Public School and another by the Picton District Historical and Family History Society,
  • a commemorative calendar published by the Collector Historical Society,
  • an essay competition and art show from the Boorowa Remembers committee,
  • a memorial and garden at Bungonia, Colo Vale, Binalong and another established by the Goulburn Rose Festival committee,
  • First World War exhibitions at Yass, Marulan, Bribbaree, Young, The Oaks, Taralga and Gunning, a commemorative CD produced by the Upper Lachlan Dame Mary Gilmore Society,
  • a community event hosted by the Taralga RSL Sub-Branch, and
  • memorial cenotaphs and honour rolls are being installed or revived at Goulburn’s Rocky Hill Monument, Picton, Harden Murrumburrah, Cowra, Cootamundra, Gundaroo, Murringo, Bowning, Wallendbeen, Breadalbane and Woodstock.

Mr Taylor encouraged everyone to take time to support these local events and commemorations to mark the historic occasion of the Anzac Centenary.
