Pledge to maintain squeaky clean slate on entitlements

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says he will maintain a squeaky clean slate on parliamentary entitlements.

“I welcome the clarification of rules relating to the claiming of expenses for parliamentary and electorate work. I particularly welcome the new ‘name and shame’ measure whereby any MP or Senator who fails to comply with the rules may be named in parliament,” Mr Taylor said.

“This issue is of the utmost importance. The public must have complete confidence that their elected representatives are only claiming reasonable expenses for legitimate representative work.

“As a new MP, I have not yet lodged a single claim for travel expenses. When I do, it will be with respect for the rules as they have been clearly laid out and with the people of Hume in mind,” he said.

Mr Taylor said the new measures announced by Special Minister of State Michael Ronaldson also included a 25% penalty loading on incorrect travel claims, the removal of several spouse and family entitlements, mandatory training for parliamentarians who make incorrect travel claims and the strengthening of the declaration each parliamentarian has to make when lodging a claim.

“These reforms are aimed at improving accountability and reassuring the public that the new Coalition Government will be representing the people in an open and honest manner and will be listening to their concerns,” Mr Taylor said.

“My slate will be kept squeaky clean on all matters relating to management of entitlements and the spending of public money.”
